Robert Saleh: Joe Flacco should be a starter in this league

It’s been three seasons and two teams ago since Joe Flacco was a starter in the NFL. The quarterback has made only five starts the past two seasons for the Jets.

Yet, Jets coach Robert Saleh insists that Flacco, at age 37, still could start full time in the NFL.

“He should be, in my opinion,” Saleh said of Flacco as a starter, via Cody Benjamin of CBS Sports. “He could start in this league. I believe that. Sometimes this league has a tendency to pigeonhole people, or put labels on people, and then their opportunities kind of get limited. But Joe Flacco is a starting quarterback in this league. He’s really, really talented.”

Flacco is entering his third season with the Jets. He mentored Sam Darnold in 2020, and Zach Wilson in 2021 after the Jets moved on from Darnold and drafted Wilson. In between those two quarterbacks, Flacco backed up Jalen Hurts briefly in Philadelphia.

Saleh gushed about how big a part of the quarterbacks room Flacco is.

“His presence, his demeanor, the way he goes about his business, he is fantastic,” Saleh said. “He is an open book (for Wilson and the other QBs). . . . He is phenomenal. He really is.”

Flacco led the Ravens to a Super Bowl XLVII victory over the 49ers, winning Super Bowl MVP honors. He has made 176 regular-season starts and 15 in the postseason.

everytime he says something like that it just further cements my thinking that he's a bit of a pollyanna. Doesn't mean he can't be successful though.

Flacco had a chance to be the guy in Denver after Baltimore, didn’t work out, not sure what happened there but you rarely get more bites at the Apple

He’s great for Zach and could probably win a bunch of games with this jets roster

I wonder if the jets are going to dangle Mike White, be nice to carry only 2 QB’s this season

          "...just not here."
After the game a reporter said to Namath, "[Joe] You're king of the hill." Namath replied, …
"No, No, ...we're king of the hill. We got the team, brother!"

Flacco has a big time arm, always has had one but he had many, many chances to step up with the Ravens and prove he was an elite, all time type QB for them but in the end they let him go, walked from him and nobody lined up to grab him.
Could one argue he is an NFL starting QB., well, of course, he was for many years and he seemingly is not a Victim of his age, however, nobody signed him except Jets and requests to trade for him, obviously are not keeping Our GM up all night .
Lets not rewrite history, the Ravens and the league pretty much gave up on the guy as a franchise QB three years ago.
How many here thought he was still a starting QB with a future when we signed him?
he is what he is, a competent veteran QB who can probably still lead a team to the playoffs if that’s the direction you want to go, obviously we aren’t going there ,not with the #2 pick of last years draft our future.

And they took a huge chance with Jackson too, imho. That spoke volumes, that Joe's long time coach didn't even want him and without a sure thing to replace him with. But mainly he got overpaid after that SB run.

Perhaps he should be wearing #16? He reminds me a little of Vinny. lol Not a bad thing either, in a good way. But clearly on the backside and just hanging on at this point, mentoring.

I don't think so because they want to keep him around as a mentor for Zach. Mike White certainly can't fill that role.

This happens because Robert Saleh opened his big mouth ... and doesn't realize the difference between NY and SF or Tampa etc.

You make a comment like he made about Flacco somewhere else and nobody pays attention.

You make that SAME COMMENT in NY and this is the Hornets nest you stir up.
"For what is a man, what has he got, if not himself, then he has not, to say the things he truly feels, and not the words of one who kneels."

That's not how it went down Hammer. The tweet that started that was made at 8 AM on the 3rd by twitter account NFLRumors & Saleh's comments were made after practice on the 3rd.
